High-Performance Hot Rolled ASTM A240 TP316L Stainless Steel Plates Deliver Superior Corrosion Resistance for Marine Shipbuilding
Date: October 21, 2025
[wuxi, china] — A new batch of Hot Rolled ASTM A240 TP316L (S31603) Stainless Steel Plates with a NO.1 finish and widths ranging from 1500mm to 3000mm is now available for the global marine and shipbuilding industry. Known for its exceptional corrosion resistance, durability, and weldability, this stainless steel plate is designed to meet the demanding conditions of seawater exposure and harsh chemical environments.
Manufactured according to ASTM A240 standards, type 316 and 316L are chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels enhanced with molybdenum. This key alloying element significantly improves resistance to chloride corrosion and acidic conditions, making grades 316/316L ideal for marine and offshore applications.
Compared to 304/304L stainless steel, the 316/316L grades offer far superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in saltwater environments. The low carbon content of 316L (maximum 0.030%) minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, ensuring excellent intergranular corrosion resistance and strength retention — a crucial property for ship hulls, tanks, and engine components.
Both grades are non-magnetic in the annealed condition, though slight magnetism may appear after cold working. This can be corrected through additional heat treatment if required.
Applications of ASTM A240 316/316L stainless steel include:
Marine and shipbuilding components exposed to saltwater and chloride-rich environments
Chemical and petrochemical processing equipment
High-temperature parts such as engine and motor housings
Structural frames, tanks, and enclosures requiring both strength and corrosion resistance
